2. The legs are jointed at both the hips and the knees. There are no mini-wings on the back. I had the doll restrung by The Doll Shoppe, 13300 Riverside Drive, Sherman Oaks, CA 91423 (818-784-3655). They used a bright light to determine that there were no hidden hairline cracks. |

3. Left side view. As you can see, the doll is in beautiful original condition. |

4. Right side view. |
| 5. Signature on bottom of left foot. When Rose O'Neill traveled, she often went to toy stores and signed dolls on the bottom of the left foot. She evidently held this doll in her hands and signed it. |

6. Mark on the neck says, "ges. gesch. O'Neill. J.D.K. 11" (Picture taken before restringing) |
| 7. Another view of face.
For at least 50 years the doll had adhesive tape wrapped around the neck--evidently because the strings were loose. Residue from that tape is visible in this photo and the photo of the inscription on neck. |

8. This is how this Kewpie was clothed for the last 50 or more years. This non-removable clothing kept the body nice, protected the bisque, and preserved the signature on the bottom of the foot. Though this clothing is probably not original, I kept it with the doll. |

| 11. Jan Foulke includes in her book Kestner, King of Dollmakers, this photo of an identical 12" Kewpie wearing this dress. Note the Kewpie tag over her left shoulder. Foulke does not say if all the 12" Kestner Kewpies came with this dress or if it was an optional accessory. |

12. Foulke remarks about this particular example of the 12" Kestner doll, "This Kewpie is especially desirable because he has a tagged pink flower print cotton dress and bonnet with lace trim." |
| 13. This is what is printed on the tag on the dress on the doll shown in Jan Foulke's book, Kestner, King of Dollmakers. |

| On June 24, 2005 another glass-eyed, jointed
Kestner Kewpie sold on eBay. From the description and the photos, I notice
the following points that are different from my mother's doll:
A. It is listed as 12-1/2", rather than 12". But with jointed dolls this large, this may just mean the doll was measured differently. But I don't know, the doll may be larger. B. This doll has blue eyes that glance to the doll's right, where my mother's had brown eyes glancing to the doll's left. C. This doll appears to have been repainted, but I don't know. D. The signature on the bottom of the foot was obviously done by a different person than the person who signed my mother's doll. None of the letters are shaped the same, and all the letters on my mother's doll slant to the right at the bottom, while all the letters on this doll slant to the left. E. The back of the knee joint is obviously very different. This doll has a much more narrow slot. Click on photos to enlarge. |
